This is a continuation of the my series of posts on the best entertainment available on streaming services that are available in the region — I’m based in Egypt. My first post in the series was about OSN Plus, a service I subscribe to mainly to watch HBO content in Egypt. HBO content is exclusive to them in the region.
In this post, I will talk about my favorite shows on Amazon Prime Video. These, are, in my humble opinion, the best shows on Amazon Prime. I get prime video as a side effect of subscribing to Amazon Prime to get one day delivery of products. As someone who does a lot of shopping on Amazon, this make perfect sense to me. What are the best shows on Amazon Prime?
Here is the list of my favorite shows. Tastes can be subjective, but the production quality of these shows as well as the superb acting is bound to make you like at least some of them.
- Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: I am a huge fan of Tom Clancy’s novels. I was introduced to them in my early universities days, and I’ve been hooked ever since. There are many gems in the Clancy oeuvre (Rainbox Six, The Hunt for Red October, Red Storm Rising, The Sum of All Fear — I could go on an on about his amazing books), but my favorite books of his have always involved Jack Ryan. A wholesome person who works as an intelligence analyst in the CIA, books involving him are entertaining and riveting. This series is an adaptation of his world for streaming. Check it out, I am sure you won’t regret it.
- The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power: What can I say about Tolkien? His books are amazing. His world building is rich and his mythology can rival that of many existing cultures — it just seems so real! We have already seen adaptations of four of his novels for the Big Screen — The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit Series. Now Amazon has adapted his, arguably, richest and most involved world building effort — the work that forms the foundation over which all of his other books are built — The Silmarillion. If you are a Tolkien fan, and I sure hope you are, you must watch this series! It deviates quite a bit from the book, but it is still captivating and retains the spirit of his work.
- The Wheel of Time: You may be sensing a theme by this time. Yes, I am a bookworm, and yes this is another series based on books — The wheel of time. This time by Robert Jordan. This series draws on Asian and Abrahamic religions to create a high fantasy setting where magic is the order of the day. The wheel of time represents a cyclic view of the universe, derived from Asian religions, where the world is “made” and “broken” over and over again. The book series is large and the story multifaceted. The Amazon series centers around the search for “the chosen one”, a common theme in fantasy novels, who can wield magic to either restore the world, or “break” it again. But which will it be? The first season ends in a cliffhanger that has me thirsty for more. Match it, seriously you won’t regret it!
- The Boys: To round up my favorite series on Amazon Prime list, is a show based on a comic book series — The Boys. This is a satirical take on the superhero genre. In this series, superheroes are not what they seem. They are greedy, backed by corporations and sometimes immoral. The Boys, a group of vigilantes, keep them in check by punching them if they misbehave. Sometimes violently. This is not a series for the squeamish. But its themes sometimes resonate with the real world. Because corporate greed is, unfortunately, not limited to fiction. It also discusses themes of power, and how it can corrupt. Overall a series well worth watching.
Conclusion
That’s it ladies and gents, these are my favorite shows on Amazon Prime. They are, in my opinion, the best shows on Amazon Prime and are well worth the subscription. As a bonus, I get same day delivery of products when I buy stuff on Amazon. Over all, a win-win for me. Give it a shot, they have a free trial.
